Record savings for Public Sector Scotland

We're delighted to have saved Scotland's public sector over £4million in water costs in the past financial year.

The latest total represents a significant increase on the previous year’s savings of £3milion - reflecting growing engagement from public sector organisations alongside the rollout of advanced technology and enhanced data tools.

Jo Dow, Chief Executive, said: “By combining smarter technology with close customer collaboration, we’re helping organisations gain greater visibility over water usage, identify opportunities to reduce waste and deliver meaningful long-term savings.

“The scale of the savings achieved this year highlights the value of taking a proactive and data-led approach to water efficiency across large and complex estates.” 

Using colleague input, customer feedback and accessibility best practice, we’ve redesigned our bills to improve clarity and ensure an improved customer experience.

Alongside a new look and feel, we've made other key changes.

• It's now easier to identify if you're due a payment and if so, how much is due

• The front page has been condensed to include the important information up front

• You'll find QR codes that you can scan to find additional, specific information on our website

• New explanations of charges have been included to address common queries

• Consumption is broken down per meter so you can better understand how much water you're using

• We've added a breakdown to show contract charges including contractual discounts

• We've split the last page of your bill into different modules to make the information easier to digest

• Additionally, we've been working with Plain Numbers to ensure that the numbers presented on our bills are clear, accessible and easy to understand. 

You’ll see these changes to your bill within the coming months and we’ll be launching a new bill explainer tool on our website at the same time, which you can use to understand more. If you weren't able to attend our recent webinar on this, you'll find a recording of it within the Useful Resources Library on our website.

Strengthening operational water resilience

We recently worked with the Scottish Parliament’s Strategy & Performance Manager, and Facilities Team, to introduce a new, bespoke Emergency Water and Contingency Plan for the Scottish Parliament building at Holyrood.

Upgrades to their water infrastructure will allow us to help them during any future water emergency, providing a 24/7 response, and allowing them to continue their important work in the event of an outage. We worked closely with the Parliamentary Security Team to meet stringent security standards, due to the high-profile nature of the building, sourcing and installing equipment within strict guidelines.

Scottish Parliament have since commissioned a second tanker fill point to further extend emergency water coverage.

Developing young careers

Earlier this month, our Head of ESG, Sophia Goring, facilitated two Career Ready Master Classes to over 100 students across Edinburgh. The masterclasses focused on preparing for the world of work - covering topics such as expected behaviours, how to plan for Career Ready placements and how placements can benefit future careers.

And we're delighted that our next group of Career Ready students started their four-week work placement with us on Monday, 22 June. This year we have six students joining us and we’ve planned an exciting programme for them, which includes skills sessions, project work, 1-2-1 CV and personal statement support, opportunities to meet colleagues from across the business and support to deliver their final presentation at the end of their placement. We recently hosted our latest webinars – Scotland’s smart meter rollout – which took place in April and took a deep dive into smart metering and the planned rollout for 2027 through to 2033, when Scottish Water aim to have 100% smart meter coverage, and Introducing our new bill design – which took place in June and explored the improvements we’ve made to our latest bill design including the application of the ‘Plain Numbers’ approach.

2026/27 Water Efficiency Fund applications  

Thank you to those of you who applied to our 2026/27 Water Efficiency Fund. Applications closed on Friday, 29 May and we're delighted to have received some exceptional applications showcasing diverse and impactful water efficiency initiatives from within your organisations. The evaluation process has been taking place throughout June and we’ll be in touch to confirm the successful applicants at the end of June.

Primary School Education Programme

Since the launch of our Making a Positive Difference (MAPD) vision in 2019, we’ve been delivering water-saving workshops at local primary schools as part of our Primary School Education Programme.

Earlier this month, some of our colleagues volunteered to spend the day at Murrayburn Primary School in Edinburgh where the children carried out an enterprise workshop to explore the world of work and learned all about the ways they can save water at home and in school.
